There are many ways you can help.
If you want to work behind the scenes, for example in our administrative office please contact us to discuss opportunities. We are especially interested in volunteers who have skills such as document organizing, graphic design, inventory control or other work a small organization like the NLCMC needs help with. If this sounds like you, please reach out and share your interest with us.
Of course we have a need for ongoing volunteers for our meal service. These jobs also afford a chance to work with the the kitchen "team" and the public. A little bit more detail as follows:
This includes for example, turning donations of fresh vegetables into part of a meal, buttering bread for a dinner side, or portioning out desserts.
Help us get meals out the door to individuals, families and partner organizations
An essential part of every meal served
We would love to hear from you!
Thank You!
Cheryl Crocker humbly accepted the honor of being New London Community Meal Center (NLCMC) February Volunteer of the Month. Cheryl volunteers regularly on Mondays from 9 AM to 1 PM and describes herself as “the salad Diva” working side by side with Hildy to accomplish these delicious side dishes. Mark Mc Quillar state that Cheryl’s pleasant demeanor, consistent performance while at the meal center and dedication made her the perfect person for this months honor.
Ms. Crocker began volunteering at NLCMC about a year ago. Previously she worked as a paralegal and supported the work of hospice in an administrative capacity. She is retired from her professional employment affording her the time and opportunity to enjoy the comradary and service at NLCMC. “I have the time and energy and people are hungry.” Speaking about the New London Community Meal Center she said, “It’s a good group…a well run organization.”
Other volunteer work locations that Cheryl has given her time and talents to include hospitals, hospice, and her children’s schools in Waterford. Cheryl enjoys gardening, knitting, walking, beaching and reading. Cheryl’s all time favorite book is Cutting For Stone and adamantly recommended it. This novel was written by an Ethiopian born Indian American doctor. This saga details the lives of twin brothers, orphaned at birth and forsaken by their father. Cutting for Stone received a nomination by Goodreads Choice Awards Best Fiction and Cheryl Crocker so it’s a …must read.
Thank you Cheryl for your delightful salads, pleasant personality, and persistent presence. You are most appreciated.
From Our volunteers
I volunteer because the people that come to the meal center are having rough times, and it can happen to anyone. I feel it is important to help people who are less fortunate, and it is really important to treat people with dignity. We are not just feeding them. I get the satisfaction of knowing I am helping people.
I volunteer because I can. I had a life and a career where I was fortunate to do well. Now that I am retired I want to spend my time giving a step up in the simple form of a meal to someone who did not have all the advantages I have had in my life.
I volunteer because it is a way of giving back to all people who helped me throughout the course of my life. I do it to give back, to pay it forward. Also, I do get personal fulfillment that is wonderful. I feel good about volunteering.
